“We had the pleasure of working with Heather as our postpartum doula from the night we brought our son Charlie home from the hospital and for 8 weeks consistently afterwards for both overnights and day work. We were introduced to her from a friend, and we were very impressed by her stellar references, as well as her engaging, kind, and thoughtful presence. Charlie is our first baby and we do not have a lot of family around to help, so it was invaluable alone to know that we would have her presence in our home upon bringing him back from the hospital. Before the birth, Heather walked through our apartment and gave helpful tips and suggestions for items that we may need when Charlie was born (and were all very correct!) Charlie was breached at 37 weeks, which was a big scare for me emotionally, and Heather walked me through the anxiety behind that with some helpful tips to “turn” him, but more importantly with patience and sage wisdom that helped me relax about the situation.
I have consistently said to many friends who have asked about our postpartum experience that Heather saved me. I was lucky enough to have an uncomplicated labor and delivery, but of course, birth is no joke for any woman. Heather was there for the first night back from the hospital, armed with her delicious and nourishing homemade beef stew. She helped us settle in and what I particularly loved about Heather was that in any spare minute that she had, she was constantly helping without being asked. She fully unpacked our ridiculous amount of bags from the hospital, did laundry, cleaned dishes and bottle parts, and gathered snacks for me while I was nursing. She brought over DELICIOUS (and addicting) peanut butter lactation cookies for me that were such a nice treat and certainly helped with my milk production. Heather also consistently suggested products and tips for me that were helpful along and through my journey as a mother (which type of bottles to use, how to pump, put on the baby bjorn, nap schedules and routines, breastfeeding tricks, etc). I still ask Heather for advice on what to do with Charlie and he is now 4 months old.
But most importantly, she was and is outstanding with Charlie. She is a great listener and still honored my wishes for what I wanted to do with Charlie and always had our intentions and parenting style come first, but she was excellent in gentle suggestions for what to do when things got tough. Charlie cluster fed for a few nights the first few weeks he was born (up every 2 hours), and the nights that Heather spent at our apartment SAVED me. My husband and I were so sleep deprived, my body so sore, and Heather was a ray of sunshine, bringing Charlie in just for me to nurse and then taking him back so I could sleep while she burped him, changed him, and soothed him to sleep.
I would 100% recommend Heather and because of her, I strongly encourage new mothers (or any pregnant woman in any situation!) that hiring a postpartum doula is a necessity, not a luxury. Her help with our family not only was invaluable to all three of us physically as she helped us recover from sleep deprivation and the throes of new parenthood, but her assistance was invaluable to me emotionally and mentally. She also gave my husband and I something to look forward to each week (just gotta make it to Wednesday - a Heather night!), and when she would take over we would get some time together which was invaluable for our relationship. We still use Heather to watch Charlie, as she is so great with him and he clearly loves her. She plays with him in engaging and stimulating ways, and I trust her completely when she is with him and I know that I can fully relax. I know for sure we will have her help us again whenever baby #2 comes along :)
THANK YOU HEATHER!!!”
